Rigorous manual selection of grapes in the vineyard. Fermentation and maceration in stainless steel for 20 days at a controlled temperature of 28-29°C, followed by malolactic fermentation. The grapes from the two vineyards are kept separate throughout the process. The two wines are aged separately in 40-hectoliter French oak barrels (90%) and 225-liter barrels (10%) for 30 months. The wines are blended in the spring, then bottled at the end of the summer and aged in the bottle for another 6 months before release on the market. This winery was founded in 1878 in the area of Santa Maria, a hamlet of La Morra. It is definitely one of the oldest producers of Barolo, a family that kept the distinctive traditional style of wine making for over a century. Over the generations, the Oddero family has gradually expanded its vineyards to today’s impressive 25 hectares, many of which lie in the illustrious Barolo vineyards of Brunate, Rocche di Castiglione, Villero and Mondoca.

The 2018 Barolo is terrific. In 2018, the Odderos were not completely convinced of the results across all their sites. Ultimately, they blended all of their vineyard designates into the straight Barolo, with the exception of the Brunate and a Riserva from Vigna Rionda. In the glass, their 2018 is captivating. Exotic aromatics, bright red berry fruit and vibrant acids give the 2018 its considerable allure. Vineyard sites are: Fiasco, Bricco Chiesa, Capalot, Bussia, Villero, Rocche di Castiglione and Monvigliero. Look for this to be one of the under the radar gems of the vintage. I loved it. In fact, the Oddero Barolo is one of the few 2018s readers should not miss. It is a very strong ‘buy’ in my book.
