From ungrafted vines ranging from 70-100 years old, the ‘Victorino’ is both classic Toro with its raw power and depth, but also remarkably fresh and elegant, especially in this vintage. With its sandy soils, ungrafted old vines, and warm weather, Toro was a sleeping giant for years. Now the Eguren brothers have sought out high altitude, old-vine vineyards to create fresh, vibrant wines that “show balance and no excesses” (Wine Advocate).

This is one of the freshest wines from the collection I tasted, a cuvée with less oak and great freshness, and therefore very good balance. Marcos Eguren agrees that 2013 is a very good and cold vintage in Toro, which resulted in wines that took some time to integrate tannins and acidity, but that have a little less alcohol and very good overall balance. The tannins are fine-grained, firm and fine, giving the wine good nerve. An elegant Toro within the natural power of the zone.

Inky purple. Explosive black and blue fruit preserves, incense and vanilla on the nose, plus suggestions of smoky minerals, licorice and candied violet. Deeply concentrated and seamless, offering appealingly sweet blueberry, mocha and floral pastille flavors that are sharpened and lifted by juicy acidity and a jolt of peppery spices. Finishes with strong thrust and supple shaping tannins.
