Az. Agr. Azelia is located in the commune of Castiglione Falletto, a small town in the heart of the area Barolo area, between the hard and powerful eastern valley and the soft and supple western valley. Established in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino the small farm began to produce everything the family needed. In 1967 Alfonso Scavino, son of Lorenzo began making wine from the estate vineyards and bottled the first wines of the estate. Now Luigi Scavino is the 3rd generation winemaker of the family and is supported by his wife Lorella and by his son Lorenzo. Luigi continues to apply what he learned from his father, together with suitable modern techniques and respect for tradition and he exclusively vinifies the grapes from his estate vineyards.Vineyard management is rigorous due to the belief that the wine is made in the vineyard, not the cellar. All the operations are carried out by hand and scrupulous attention is given to the green harvest, one of the most important steps to control the quality of grapes. Azelia somehow 'flys under the radar', quietly Luigi and now son Lorenzo have built a reputation for extremely high quality and utterly breath taking Barolos. An absolute must for any Barolo enthusiast.

Restrained, if not low-key on the nose, with spicy and peppery character to the red-fruit, pomegranate and fresh floral aromas. Medium-bodied, it shows firm, youthful tannins with crisp acidity and an austere, grainy finish. Try from 2027.

The 2021 Barolo is deep, succulent and layered. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, cedar and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. Floral and savory overtones play off a core of black cherry/plum fruit. All the elements are very nicely balanced. This is a fine showing from the Scavino family and a terrific wine in its peer group.
