Cinq Cépages opens with layers of aromas including black currant, cassis, delicate notes of perfumed violet, and savory tobacco leaves. Secondary aromas of roasted espresso, nuanced notes of Earl Gray tea, and sweet spices like cinnamon and clove add to the complexity. The palate finds rich, plush flavors of black raspberry and dark chocolate.

This full-bodied wine has well-integrated, ripe tannins giving the wine a mouth-pleasing structure and layers of complexity. In signature Cinq Cépages form, this wine combines the diverse strength of Sonoma County to create an approachable, well-balanced and elegant wine that is very enjoyable now and can age for many years to come.

The 2012 Proprietary Red Cinq Cepages is made from five Bordeaux varietals – 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in primarily French oak. The wine has a dense ruby/purple color, loads of crushed rock, cedar wood, chocolate, blackcurrant and Chinese black tea notes. It is medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin and an impressive future. This wine will actually benefit from several years of bottle age and should last 15 or more years. 91+

The producer's flagship Bordeaux-inspired blend combines 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Sanguine, it has a refined sense of cedar and pencil shavings around still-tight tannins that lean savory in tea and dark chocolate. Dried herbs dominate the finish. Cellar through 2020.

The 2012 Cinq Cepages is plump, juicy and forward. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, menthol, mocha and dark spices are all pushed forward. This is a decidedly radiant, supple Cinq Cepages that should provide readers with a good decade-plus of fine drinking. As always, Cinq Cepages is bold, racy and fruit-driven in style. Chateau St. Jean and winemaker Margo Van Staaveren excel with a range of wines that deliver an appealing combination of quality and availability, with many wines that are also budget friendly. As always, there is a real stylistic difference between the whites and reds here, that suggests the wines are made for two totally different audiences. The whites are crisp and vibrant, often with partially blocked malos, while the reds are much more opulent and flamboyant.
