Henschke Henrys Seven 750 ml

A smart, cohesive wine from a complex meld of components: 81% Shiraz co-fermented with 2% Viognier, augmented by 11% Grenache and 6% Mataro. Most of this fruit is sourced from the Barossa Valley floor and 16% from Eden Valley. A pretty nose gives lift to wild sage notes, in addition to calm berries. The palate is sharply drawn, with clean straight lines propelled by a strong acid seam, ensuring lively freshness to the flavours and finish. Matured in 5% new oak for 10 months, it confidently enjoys its lean shape, aided by the grip of fine-grained tannins at the finish. Supremely balanced and perfectly poised.

The comparatively affordable ‘baby brother’ to this historic Barossa producer’s premium red stable, Henry’s is an excellent intro, with brightness and approachability thanks, in part, to the lick of Grenache and Viognier in the blend. Aromas are lucid and layered. Think: raspberry and plum tart, cracked black pepper, thyme and dried flowers, with a freshening berry tang to the palate amidst filigree tannins. Delicious now, it could age another seven to 10 years if you’ve the patience.

Aromas of cherries, wild blackberries, violets, cassia bark and earth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of Damson plums, mocha, dried herbs and spices.
