Very tight, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, red licorice, wild herbs, flowers and crushed-rock minerality; a real essence of young Musigny. Then surprisingly layered and expressive in the mouth, with its perfumed raspberry, strawberry and saline soil flavors given punch by superb mineral-driven energy. This is sweeter and more open-knit than the Amoureuses today but every bit as precise and delineated as that wine. Finishes with noble, seamless tannins and palate-staining length. The nose is composed by a special kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis is trimmed in copious wood. Otherwise there is terrific energy and intensity to the markedly stony big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors that possess impressive volume and mid-palate density while delivering first-rate detail and length if perhaps not quite the overall complexity. Still, Chambertin is known for its ability to transform over time and this may ultimately surpass the Chapelle even if that is not necessarily the case today.
