DESCRIPTION:
80% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo, 5% Syrah. In the heart of the Chianti Classico hills between Florence and Siena, lie the prized vineyards of the Isole e Olena estate. The centuries old, southwest facing vineyards cover 290 hectares of land and are situated approximately 400 meters above sea level. Paolo De Marchi took over the family-owned estate in the mid-1970s and managed to remain faithful to the traditional methods of winemaking passed down to him by previous generations, while simultaneously becoming known as a pioneer in using non-traditional varieties. The grapes used for the Chianti Classico are all estate-grown and hand-harvested. The must is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with approximately 15 days maceration. During fermentation, delestage and pumping over takes place twice a day. Delestage is a method of extraction during fermentation that gives wines of good color and soft tannins. After malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine is racked into barrels & 4000 liter casks where it matures for about a year. It is then bottled and released after 3-4 month. It is intended for drinking within 5-8 years. "The 2009 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous, racy wine laced with bright red cherries, flowers and herbs, all of which come together in the refined, medium-bodied style that is the house signature. The 2009 is vibrant, perfumed and impeccable in its overall balance."- Antonio GalloniThe name Isole e Olena was conceived in the 1950s when two adjoining estates, “Isole” and “Olena”, were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one.Isole was founded as an agricultural farm in the 1700s and is now the center of production for the Isole e Olena estate, which grows olives in addition to all of the grapes used in its wine production.Perched atop the hillsides of Chianti, Isole e Olena lays claim to some of the most prized vineyards in the region. Proprietor and winemaker, Paolo De Marchi, is considered a pioneer in introducing foreign grapes to the area, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. In fact, in a region where few other producers make Chardonnay (or any whites), Paolo is as highly regarded for his white wines as his famed reds.In Paolo's opinion, the most important aspect of making excellent wine is the unique, ancient Tuscan soil on which his estate sits. __________________________ (Paolo's) pride in his estate, on the western side of the Chianti Classico zone, is evident at every turn of the road... As we tour the vineyards or taste the wines, there is one theme to which De Marchi returns again and again: the typicity of Chianti. It is, for him, more than a philosophical or stylistic debate. It has to do with the relation of wine to the land on which the vines are grown. - Stephen Brook (Decanter, May 2006)Proprietor Paolo De Marchi has left an indelible and highly personal stamp on Isole e Olena, and all of Chianti Classico for that matter... De Marchi stands apart from many of his colleagues for his vocal opinions and intense dedication to the vineyard above all else. Since taking over his family’s estate... De Marchi has transformed Isole e Olena into a powerhouse. - Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate, June 2012)
